1. Evaluate New vs Old Regime — Choose Wisely

The new regime is now default and offers zero tax on income up to ₹12 lakh (due to rebate u/s 87A) with a revised slab structure. However, if you have a home loan, HRA, and heavy 80C investments, the old regime may still save you more. Run the numbers before filing — or let a CA do it for you.

2. Claim the ₹75,000 Standard Deduction (New Regime)

The standard deduction under the new regime has been increased to ₹75,000 from FY 2026-27. This is automatic — no investment needed. Salaried IT professionals should ensure their employer reflects this correctly in Form 16.

3. Maximise NPS via Employer Contribution — Section 80CCD(2)

The employer NPS contribution deduction has been raised to 14% of basic salary for private sector employees (up from 10%). This is available even under the new regime and is one of the most powerful tax-saving tools for IT professionals with flexible salary structures.

4. Use 80C, HRA & 80D — Only If on Old Regime

If you opt for the old regime, fully utilise the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit (ELSS, PPF, NPS), claim HRA if you're on rent, and don't miss Section 80D for health insurance premiums (up to ₹75,000 including parents). These deductions don't apply under the new regime.

5. Declare All Income — Freelance, Interest & Capital Gains

IT professionals with freelance income, savings interest, or mutual fund/stock gains must declare all sources. Short-term capital gains on equity are now taxed at 20% and long-term at 12.5% (post Budget 2024 changes effective FY 2026-27). Accurate reporting avoids notices and penalties.
